Title: Baby Makes Four (14/?)
Summary: Michael visits his lawyer again.
Disclaimer: All fiction
I’m sitting in my lawyer’s office again, waiting for him to begin speaking. It’s been a week since I’ve seen Gracie last and, while that’s an improvement, it still isn’t enough.
"Okay. We need to go over the testimonies of everyone who is willing to testify on your behalf. These would be people who know you well, and who are a part of your daughter’s life and know you as a father - a good one. After that, which may or may not be enough, we need any indication that your ex wife is just unfit enough that she is unfit to get full custody. Then, I think, we’ll be set."
"Okay. Who did you have in mind?"
"Well, Misters Cook and Castro, for starters."
"They already agreed to that."
"Good. Now, are your parents willing to testify?"
"My mother is flying in just before the trial."
"Excellent. Is there anyone else you had in mind?"
I think for a moment, and no one comes to mind. "Not really."
"Alright. That should be plenty."
Then a thought occurs to me. "What if Gracie’s teacher and principal came to the trial? Would that be of any help?"
"Of course, if they are willing."
"I’ll ask them."
"Is there anything else?"
"No, I don’t think so, Mr. Johns. The trial is set for December 3rd. I believe that it should take at least a day or two, pending."
"Good. I’ll want to see everyone that is testifying the day before the trial to review their testimonies with them. If you could arrange that and bring them to the courthouse on the second of December that would be wonderful."
"Great, I’ll do that."
"Okay, then. I will see you then, Mr. Johns. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me."
"Will do. Thank you."
"You’re welcome. Goodbye."
I leave the office and make my way through the crowd of reporters that seems to follow me everywhere I go now, and drive home.
David and Jason are waiting outside with David Puddy when I pull into the driveway, and the three of them rush to my car when I park and start to get out.
"Hey." David says, opening the door for me and pulls me into the house.
"Hey yourself. How are you guys?"
Jason comes up from behind me and wraps his arms around my waist. "Great. We were just waiting for you."
David comes from behind me and nuzzles my neck. "We missed you."
I close my eyes and smile. "Missed you two, too."
"Mmm." Jason rests his cheek against my shoulder blades and I pull him around onto my lap on the couch.
He lays his head in the crook of my neck and wrap his arms around my waist again. I feel his breath slow as he gently falls asleep. David sits next to us and pulls Jason’s legs up to rest on his own.
"So," David says. "How was it?"
"Alright. You two and my mom need to come to the courthouse so Regal can go over your testimonies."
David nods his head and looks at me. "Don’t worry, man. We’ll be alright. I’m sure of it."
"I hope so. I told Gracie I’d fix everything for her."
"You will. You’re a good dad. No one can take her away from you. Or from us."
"You’re right." I reach out my hand and grasp his while still keeping a firm grasp on the sleeping Jason’s back. "You’re right." I repeat as I lay my head back against the couch and fall asleep.
